The 10th annual Whistler Readers and Writers Festival is coming to Whistler on the weekend of October 14th to 16th. Celebrate the art and culture of the literary world at this great event. The weekend will be filled with reading events from top authors, workshops, panel discussions and much more!
The event is organised by the Vicious Circle. This Whistler Writers Group was founded in 2001 to provide a forum for local writers to develop their craft and connect with like-minded literati. Each year the Vicious Circle hosts a Whistler Writer in Residence. This year’s Residence is Sarah Selecky who will be one of the presenting authors at the 2011 Readers and Writers Festival. Sarah Selecky is a Canadian writer, whose debut short story collection This Cake is for the Party was a shortlisted nominee for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and long listed for the Frank O’Connor Short Story Award in 2010.
The Opening Gala takes place on the Friday evening at the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Center. Guest authors include Madeline Sonik, Miriam Toews, Antanas Sileika, John Glenday, Angie Abdou, Randy Boyagoda, and Sarah Selecky in conversation with local writer Stephen Vogler. Each author will read and discuss their latest work.
Other highlights of the weekend include the Lit Grit Tribute Breakfast with Wayne Johnston, Miriam Toews and Sarah Selecky. Come join the festival’s first ever guest author, Andreas Schroeder break bread and interview literary icons, Miriam Toews and Wayne Johnston and the 2011 writer in residence Sarah Selecky.
For the children there is a great workshop happening on Friday October 14th at 3pm at the Whistler Public Library. This free workshop is titled “All Aboard – a Travel Guide to Magic Places and Other Destinations” with Alma Alexander. Explore all the wonderful places in stories from Narnia to Hogwarts.
The festival this year will host 10 workshop sessions, 6 reading events, 3 panel discussion, a breakfast tribute to icons of writing, and a spoken word performance entitled Creative 5 Eclectic.
This is going to be a fun weekend and there will be an event of workshop for everyone to enjoy.
