Summit Lodge raised $15K to build a school in Mexico

On Friday May 5th 200 guests and members of the Whistler community came together at the Summit Lodge to kick-start our summer-long fundraising series for Mission San Quintin.

Our goal is to raise $40K by fall 2017. That’s enough money to send a team and supplies to the San Quintin Valley in Mexico to build a school in a rural town.

Thanks to our silent auction partners including the Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver, Sunwolf, Canadian Wilderness Adventures, Black Tie Ski Rental, Opus Hotel, Mountain Home Decor and more who donated thousands of dollars worth of prizes.

We’re Turning Out The Lights For Earth Hour

Every March we celebrate Earth Hour’s symbolic “lights off” movement. Earth Hour started in 2007 as a small idea with a big goal: to unite people all over the world in one moment of solidarity, conversation, inspiration and action around climate change.

We are currently the only hotel and business in Whistler with an event registered to celebrate Earth Hour. One day we’d like the whole town to turn out the lights together, in one giant show of environmental consciousness for the beautiful province and country we love in. Please share this post and help us lead others to join Earth Hour, too.

Why do we celebrate Earth Hour?

As travel becomes more accessible and affordable we feel that as a hotel, and individually as stewards of our planet, it is our duty to be positive ambassadors for the protection of the environment that so many travel here to experience. We also believe that the hospitality industry, as a whole, has a responsibility to help guests live a sustainable lifestyle on vacation, as they would at home.

We are by no means a perfect gold-standard of sustainability, but we’re continually taking one more step to get us a little closer. Sharing Earth Hour with our guests is an important way to show that making a change is not about big grand gestures, but about striving to be better every day.

We won’t leave you entirely in the dark on March 28th during Earth Hour, the hotel (and even the pool and hot tub) will be illuminated with the warm relaxing glow of candles and tea lights.

Watch The Whole TED Conference Live With Us

We’re very excited to announce that we’re going to be streaming the entire TED conference live, for you to come and watch. On top of that, we’re also going to host two TED-themed parties showing the most inspiring, fascinating and ingenious talks from the days before as well as a couple of classic TED crowd favourites.

Brown Owl + Summit Lodge Presents: An Evening Of The Best TED Talks – Public

We’ve partnered up with the Brown Owl Social Club for a unique night of creativity, inspiration and conversation. The Brown Owl will be curating a list of the week’s most fascinating, jaw-dropping, persuasive and funny talks from TED Vancouver, moderating short open discussions, and encouraging you to share your own ideas and thoughts on how any of the talks could be applied to Whistler.

#SummitLovesWAG A Twitter-Powered Donation

 

#SummitLovesWAG

#SummitLovesWAG is a project that literally evolved on Twitter overnight, and we’re so excited that we’ve been able to make it happen with help from a few of our online friends. Hopefully you’re interested to find out all about it, so let us fill in the gaps:

Gap 4: We’re now donating 50¢ to WAG for every new Twitter follower in October!

It really happened just like that. We asked our Twitter followers what we should do and this really means a lot to them, so we’re going with it and we’re incredibly excited! It’s not often, on social media, that you get to be part of something that genuinely has a direct impact on the community you live in. This is incredibly apt as it is also National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, too – this impromptu fundraiser couldn’t have happened at a better time.

Sometimes the universe lays out the pieces and you just have to put them together. Thanks cosmos!

Gap 5: What is WAG and why is it important to us

Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) was founded in 1982 when two friends identified the need for an animal rescue service in the Sea-to-Sky corridor. Since then, WAG has grown into a respected community asset that has found ‘forever homes’ for thousands of animals from great danes to guinea pigs. Without them, many of our furry friends would not be living the happy lives they have today.

Why is 2000 followers is important to us?

To some people 2000 followers might not seem like a lot, but to us this is a big deal. We relish every opportunity to meet new exciting people – and now we know almost 2000 awesome people, on Twitter alone!

For example, just yesterday we came across this a gorgeous photo of musician, actress and writer  at Lost Lake on Instagram. Interested in how her songwriting was going, we found her on Twitter which then lead to her visiting us in person for an inspiring creative afternoon at the hotel.

We love our online family, so when we realised we were almost at 2000 followers we asked everyone on Twitter what we should do to celebrate…and this is the happy ending.

How to share, follow and help raise money

First, please start by following us on Twitter at @WhistlerSummit. Second, share this post with everyone you know so they too can share the story of #SummitLovesWAG. Thirdly, please include the has hashtags #SummitLovesWAG and #SummitCommunity so we can track the progress.

p.s. It would be incredible if this went vital and we raised provincial or global awareness for WAG. Having said that, this awesome impromptu fundraiser was not in our budget, we just wanted to help make one of our followers ideas become a reality. So should it go viral, we sadly will have to cap our donation at $1000, but we will donate our time and social media networks to continuing to promote Whistler Animals Galore!
