The third record-breaking season in a row is nearing its end and snow sport enthusiasts are beginning to look forward to the-best-fest-in-the-west, TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival. Ear-marking another super amazing season, this mid April festival promises to celebrate long and hard into each night of it’s 10 day duration.
With Legendary Filmmaker showdowns, Art exhibits, unbelievable musical performances and of course a gathering of the world’s most amazing athletes competing in their respective arenas – there is something to inspire everyone.
While the snow base will dictate an amazing late ski season, if you’re going to travel to Whistler for some spring POW – there is no better time than during the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival.
2012 Events Overview
World Skiing Invitational / AFP World Championship
- Superpipe – Competitors in the Olympic-sized Superpipe will aim high and throw-down in the most impressive display of on-mountain athleticism. Combining passion, prowess, positivity and pure attitude, the Superpipe lays it on the line for committed and confident skiers to take home a huge prize purse and priceless bragging rights. Located at Blackcomb Pipe
- Slopestyle – Slopestyle is a hugely integrated and technically challenging discipline, featuring jumps, rails, and features to challenge and intimidate even the best skiers in the world. With slopestyle skiing now included in the Winter Olympic Games, expect to see slope royalty come out to play.The slopestyle for the WSI will be taking place in the Highest Level Park on Blackcomb.
- Big Air – The Big Air jump, located at the base of Whistler Mountain, is the ultimate in ski-voyeurism. Not for the faint of heart, this jump will shock, amaze and intimidate, and that’s just the spectators! Immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of Skier’s Plaza, and watch the mind-boggling aerial talents of the who’s who of the ski world throw down in one of the most impressive displays of raw talent and gutsy trick-wrangling in an attempt to walk away with the coveted title of Big Air Champion, a brand new Chevrolet Cruze courtesy of sponsor Chevrolet and endless bragging rights.
FREE Outdoor Concert Series
In a world where nothing comes for free, Whistler, aka Gnarnia, offers up a 10-day program of music concerts spanning a vast variety of genres to feed your soul and support your wallet. Stuff dreams are made of: an epic schedule of award-winning artists will be on hand to keep the party juices flowing for the entire 10 days of the Festival.
State of the Art Opening Party – Friday, April 13
Sub-cultures and anti-movements are celebrated and portrayed in gritty and thought-provoking mediums. Local and international artists come from far and wide to create a community of urban street and snow ingenuity, and push the boundaries of the State of the Art.
Olympus 72 hr. Filmmaker Showdown – Tuesday, April 17
Relying purely on originality, craft, speed and endurance, the OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown distills the art of film-making into its purest form – taking creative vision from concept to reality in record time in order for it to be enjoyed on the big screen by an 1800-strong audience. The OLYMPUS 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown gives deadline a whole new meaning; get ‘er done or you’re out.
Fashion EXPOSED + Freeze Dance Showcase – Friday, April 20
The TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival will celebrate 7 years of fashion, form and function by asking: “What will you be wearing for the end of the world?” Inspired by the chaos of society, and mythical hype towards the end of days, Fashion EXPOSED – Armageddon, the West Coast’s most energy-infused and original fashion show, will answer this question and more by showcasing the best Summer 2012 and Fall/Winter 2012/13 Collections from across the street/action/lifestyle fashion industry.
Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown – Thursday, April 19
As the preeminent action sports photography contest in the world, the OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown is an unparalleled celebration of still images and of the commitment shown to build a body of work that captures time and captivates the human spirit. $17,000 in cash prizes have been allocated, cementing the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s OLYMPUS Pro Photographer Showdown as the World’s preeminent action sports photography event.
Intersection – Wednesday, April 18
Intersection sees action sport filmmaking pushed to its limits. Filmmakers have only seven days to shoot, edit and produce a 5-7 minute extreme sports short film. The final results of their efforts will be played at this event.
The Shred Show: A Snowboarding Event – Saturday, April 14
Monster Energy, the title sponsor for the snowboarding component of the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival, is also known for its partying and, not surprisingly, burn-the-candle energy. The team has assembled an array of incredible après and night-time parties, to suit every music taste and party stamina. The snowboarding events include the Mogul Mash, a fast and furious moguls course for snowboarders, the Boarderstyle event and Dustin Craven’s FUN Pipe Jam.
Pecha Kucha – Monday, April 16
Presenting the most explosive, up to the minute form of public speaking and entertainment, Pecha Kucha, loosely meaning ‘chit chat’ in Japanese, tasks presenters with the challenge of communicating their thoughts, ideas and concepts in short bursts of 20 x 20 second Power Point slides. Think Twitter meets Skype meets Facebook, all in real life, all in real time.
