Unless you’ve played in a school orchestra or listen to classical radio stations, chances are you think of classical music as the quiet, background noise heard in movies, elevators, and upscale department stores … or the oh-so familiar tunes you impatiently tap your fingers to while customer service puts you on hold.
Some may consider it difficult to embrace classical music, if not raised on it. If this is you, why not give it a chance this summer in Whistler? You may only recognize Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from the milk advertising campaign, Drink milk, love life! of the late 1990’s, but Hey, at least you’ll be humming along!
Mark it on your calendar and in a month’s time, grab your blankets and lawn chairs, and head over to Whistler Olympic Plaza for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Free Concert Series!
The Vancouver Sympathy Orchestra’s 2013/2014 Season celebrates ninety-five years of making music for the people of Vancouver and British Columbia. With over 140 concerts performed each year, an annual attendance over 20,000, this is one of Whistler’s unique and free events that you don’t want to miss a note of!
With Whistler’s soaring mountain peaks and breathtaking summer skies, the VSO couldn’t have asked for a better backdrop. The 73 musicians, conducted by Sean Newhouse will perform thick, rumbling sonic brilliance from some of the greatest composers like Mozart and Mendelssohn.
Joining Newhouse and the VSO is renowned violinist Mayuko Kamio who will perform Mendelssohn’s thrilling Violin Concerto, and Dvorak’s beautiful New World Symphony.
The rich and resonant vibrations of the orchestra’s brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments will fill Whistler Village with spirited sounds that may be favourites to some, but likely are new to many. These three class acts will lead you through a memorable and majestic musical experience. Who knows, your new found love for classical music just may develop here, in the heart of Whistler.
The VSO performs in Whistler July 19, 20, 21. Shows start at 8:00 PM and general admission is free, although there is a paid VIP Section with preferred seating and free access to the VSO reception following Friday’s performance.
